about
The words in "Tukuna Kia Rere" are a combination of two karakia Māori (prayers or chants), the first of which is currently used by Māori to bless the activities and people present at the start of the day or at the beginning of a meeting or a journey. The second is a karakia used by Ngāti Porou in traditional times to bless a waka before it made its inaugural voyage into the water (as recorded by Mohi Ruatapu, 1871). One Waka use these karakia Māori in this context as we are at the beginning of a journey that we hope will bring a sense of satisfaction and joy to anybody that is associated with us, and to ensure that whatever the outcomes, the Waka will arrive safely at its destination. One Waka also acknowledge the importance of te reo Māori me ōna tikanga (Māori language and cultural traditions) to us and begins any event One Waka participates in by using appropriate Māori language and cultural traditions. "Tukuna Kia Rere" is a kīwaha (Māori saying) that literally means “Let it fly free”. In using this as a name for the karakia to begin this album, we set One Waka free to travel whatever pathways that present themselves ahead, and invite you all to enjoy the fruits of our labour.
Slack falsetto melodies, lush dub arrangements, and feel-good lyrics come together for a memorable pop-reggae getaway. Bandcamp New & Notable Sep 14, 2022
